Madrid - Spaniards stood in silence yesterday in a sombre protest at the killing of a well-liked former cabinet minister in an apparent attack by Basque separatist guerrillas of ETA.

Public sector workers across the country stood outside offices and town halls for several minutes to pay their respects to Prof Ernest Lluch (63), a former Socialist health minister who was shot dead on Tuesday night.
