Johannesburg - Graphic video of police dogs repeatedly savaging three black men while six laughing white officers urged them on has thrown South African racism into sharp relief a month before nationwide local elections.

National Police Commissioner Mr Jackie Selebi ordered the immediate arrest of the six officers yesterday after the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) gave officials a private preview of the broadcast.

He said in a statement that white officers continuing to practise racism six years after the end of white apartheid rule would be "flushed out and imprisoned".
