Some weekend: racing, football and a bit of tango

WHETHER YOU enjoy sport, art, theatre or music there is something on this weekend to suit all tastes, whatever the weather.

Large crowds are expected in Co Meath for the Adelaide International Kells Road Races, where entrants include Cameron Donald, William Dunlop, Michael Dunlop and Derek Sheils.

Comedian PJ Gallagher makes his road racing debut at the Kells event. Practice stages will take place this morning while tomorrow is race day. A Garda traffic management plan is in place for the event.

The Ulster and Connacht senior GAA football finals take place tomorrow, with Kerry and Dublin having already made it through to the next round.

Roscommon take on Mayo on home ground in Dr Hyde Park in the Connacht decider at 2pm while throw-in at the Ulster football final comes two hours later at Clones where Donegal meet Derry.

GAA qualifiers on this evening include Meath and Kildare at Páirc Tailteann, Navan, and Limerick and Waterford at Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

Elsewhere, Antrim take on Down at Casement Park, Belfast, while Wicklow take on Armagh in their replay in Aughrim.

All qualifiers start at 7pm and patrons are advised to plan ahead as increased traffic is expected before and after each event.

For those travelling by train between Cork and Dublin check if you can access free wi-fi on board. Iarnród Éireann plans to install the service in all 67 carriages on the route by September.

Anyone travelling in the Skibbereen-Baltimore area today should keep an eye out for those hardy athletes taking part in the Lough Hyne Challenge. The triathlon includes a 1,500m swim, a 45km bike ride and 10km run.

There will be no road closures in place for either the cycle or run, but gardaí will be on point duty and motorists are advised to take extra care.

Traffic restrictions will be in place at Dublin’s Phoenix Park this morning where the Irish Runner Five Mile Challenge starts at 10am.

Although registration has closed for the event, organisers of the Dublin Marathon race series say enthusiasts and supporters are more than welcome to cheer on the participants.

Entrants are advised to allow time to get there ahead of the start time for the race. A shuttle bus will operate from Parkgate Street from 8.30am-9.30am and will return after the race.

The Galway Arts Festival continues with its diverse range of arts and cultural events. Its busy schedule includes highlights such as today’s lunchtime performance by one of the country’s foremost accordion players Dermot Byrne accompanied by harpist Floriane Blancke at Kelly’s Bar on Bridge Street.

Award-winning Scottish video artist and choreographer Billy Cowie's five-minute dance solo installation Tango de Soledad(Tango of Solitude) is a free event danced by Amy Hollingsworth. Tango de Soledadcan be seen at the Absolut Festival Gallery between 11am and 6pm today and tomorrow.

Kildare band Bell X1 play the festival this evening while Fionn Regan takes to the stage at the Róisín Dubh tomorrow.
