Rubicon is a yearly, boutique, conference that gathers to intentionally collaborate and explore ideas about how faith can be expressed within our cultural context. The contributors are numerous and varied, from the areas of media, arts, sports, politics, entrepreneurship and philosophy in a “TED”-esque format with interaction, table discussion and tea.
This year Rubicon will explore 100 years of Irish culture, arts and faith – 1916-2016: Before, Between and Beyond. The keynote speaker is Brian Zahnd, pastor and author of Water to Wine, A Farewell to Mars and Beauty Will Save The World from Minnesota, US. Joining him are Stephen James Smith (Slam poet, writer and performer of Dublin You Are), Pádraig Ó Tuama (Corrymeala Community leader), Canon Patrick Comerford (lecturer in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute), Dr James Gallen (lecturer in the School of Law and Government at DCU), Sr Imelda Wickham (Wheatfield Prison chaplain), Ferg Brown (founder and owner of Roasted Brown), Natasha Paulberg (Dublin composer), Sr Denise Boyle (director of MECPATHS – Mercy Efforts to Counter Child Prostitution and Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector), Brendan Joseph (textile design artist), Rob Clarke (CEO of Spirit FM), Rabin Das (nutrition Lecturer at UCD Sport & Fitness)
Hosted by the Revd Rob Jones of Holy Trinity, Rathmines, and Greg Fromholz of Rubicon, this year's conference will be held on April 16th- 17th in the Church of Ireland College of Education, Rathmines, Dublin. Tickets may be booked at wearerubicon.comCumann Galelach na hEaglaise will launch a Parish Placenames Project in St Mary's church, Carlow, this evening (Saturday) after the celebration of the Eucharist at 7.30pm, as part of the Pan-Celtic Festival. The project aims to create a bilingual listing of all of parishes of the Church of Ireland. Through the co-operation of the Representative Church Body, the bilingual listing – with explanations of the Irish terms – will be incorporated into the Church of Ireland Directory. The work will be carried out on a diocese by diocese basis beginning with Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. The first consultation draft will be distributed after the service.
Tomorrow (Sunday) morning the Archbishop of Dublin will participate in the Inter-Church Service in Glasnevin Cemetery to commemorate all who died in 1916. In the evening, at 5pm in St George & St Thomas' church, Cathal Brugha Street, Dr Jackson will conduct an inauguration for the Igbo Anglican Community to worship in their local (Igbo) language on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
The Morris Knolls High School Chorale from New Jersey continues its Irish tour with a concert in Christ Church cathedral, Waterford, tomorrow (Sunday) at 4pm and on Monday at 1pm in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin.
On Saturday April 9th Prof Andrew Mayes, until his recent retirement TCD's leading Old Testament specialist, will deliver BACI's spring lecture on: Identities in a World of Historical Change – an Old Testament Quest. Registration and coffee at 10.30am at St Matthias Church, Ballybrack, will be followed by the lecture at 10.50am, proceedings concluding by 12.30pm. Andrew Mayes is an internationally recognised as an authoritative Old Testament scholar whose major publications have included The Story of Israel between Settlement and Exile, Judges, and The Old Testament in Sociological Perspective. His most recent area of interest has been Egypt as seen in the Hebrew Bible, and the historical relationship between Israel and Egypt.
