Police try to identify body of man who may have had Irish accent

Police in Britain are trying to establish the identity of a man, described as speaking with “an Irish accent”, whose body was discovered in a kayak on a beach on the Isle of Wight.

The body was discovered in a kayak at Yaverland Beach, Sandown, on the Isle of Wight at about 7.20pm, on September 11th last. The kayak was an inflatable yellow and black Sevylor.

According to local media reports, a receipt found in the short pockets of the man, thought to be in his 20s or 30s, indicate he was in the offices of Brighton Canoes, a retailer of canoes and kayaks, at Newhaven, Sussex, three days earlier, on September 8th.

He was described as white, “well built”, with dark hair and blue eyes and speaking with what was believed to be an Irish accent. He was wearing beige shorts and a blue zip-up jacket.

The discovery is being investigated by police in Hampshire.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it had not received any request for consular assistance in relation to an incident on the Isle of Wight.
