82-year-old woman dies on Limerick road

An elderly woman killed while crossing the road in a village in Co Limerick, had just returned from an outing to a House of Prayer organised by her local parish when the tragedy occurred.

Josephine 'Joanna' Kennedy from Ballygrennan, Croom, Co Limerick was fatally injured while crossing the N20 at Banogue, Croom at around 7.15pm.

The 82-year-old was crossing the road with her sister Anne Hynes (78) of Dullas, Croom, Co Limerick when the tragic accident took place.

The women had just gotten off a bus having returned from an outing organised by the local parish to a House of Prayer.

Mrs Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister was not injured but was treated for shock.

The driver of the car involved in the accident was also uninjured.

The road was closed for several hours to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Mrs Kennedy is survived by her daughter and three sons, one of whom is Inspector Tom Kennedy, based at Shannon Garda Station in Co Clare.

The 82-year-old was from a well-known farming family.

Mrs Kennedy was the 11th person to die on Limerick roads this year and the second in a less than a week.
