A small bomb exploded outside a local headquarters of Spain's ruling Socialist Party in the Basque country, police said today.

The explosion came after a telephone warning claiming to be from Basque separatist group Eta.

Police found a backpack next to the building's entrance after the call and roped off the area in the northern town of Lazkao.

The backpack exploded shortly afterwards without causing any injuries.
