Six remanded in custody over Dublin assault

Six men appeared in Dublin District Court this afternoon charged with a range of offences in connection with an attack last June which left an Englishman in critical condition in hospital.

Mr David Richardson (46) was left with serious stab wounds following the attack on himself, his wife Laverna and son Christian on Pearse Street in the early hours of Sunday, June 11th, 2000.

Mr Paul Barry (29), Mr Brian Lee (23), Mr Philip Uzell (20), Mr Paul Fitzpatrick (20), Mr Darren Kenny (31) and Mr David Colclough (29) were all charged in relation to the incident.

Mr Fitzpatrick, a shock fitter from 119, Pearse Street, Dublin 2, was charged with incitement to hatred, assault causing harm to Mr David Richardson and with violent disorder.

Mr Barry, unemployed, of 120, Pearse Street, Dublin 2, Mr Lee, an apprentice carpenter from Raheen Park, Ballyfermot, and Mr Kenny, a pipe-layer from Meade Terrace, Dublin 2, were charged with assault causing harm to Mr Christian Richardson and violent disorder.

Mr Barry and Mr Kenny were also charged with incitement to hatred.

Mr Colclough, unemployed, from 118, Pearse Street, was today charged with incitement to hatred. He was charged in June, 2000 with assaulting Mr Richardson causing him serious harm, and has been remanded in custody since September.

Mr Uzell, from 5, Boyne Street Dublin 2, was charged with discarding evidence and with assault on a passerby, Mr Fred Murray following the attack on the Richardson family.

Detective Garda Oliver McEnerney told the Court today that with the exception of Mr Colclough, the defendants had arrived at Pearse Street Garda Station by appointment this morning, where they were read the charges against them.

Detective Garda McEnerney said that when charged, Mr Lee said "I’m sorry about that, he kicked me and I was defending myself."

"Yes, I was in a fight with that fellow," Mr Uzell said when charged with the assault on Mr Murray, the Court heard. He also said: "Yes, I threw it away, but I didn’t know what it was used for," when asked about the charge of disposing of the knife used in the assault of Mr Richardson.

Mr Fitzpatrick replied "Not guilty" and the two other accused had nothing to say, Det Gda McEnerney said.

All six were granted legal aid and remanded in custody with consent to bail of £900. They are due to appear at Cloverhill District Court on May 25th.
