Six people have been treated in hospital and several cars were seriously damaged following violence in west Belfast last night.

Shortly after 8pm last night, a number of youths threw stones at passing vehicles in the Ballygomartin area of Belfast.

A PSNI spokesman said five women had to be taken to hospital suffering from severe shock, and a man also had to be treated for cuts and bruises.

A police spokesman appealed for assistance from community leaders adding: "It is inexcusable that people who are simply going about their day-to-day business can be attacked in this manner.

"This matter cannot be solved by policing alone," he added.
