Boxing: Six Irish fighters are within touching distance of a medal at European Amateur Championships in Liverpool over the next two days.

Co Wicklow lightweight Ross Hickey and Belfast bantamweight Ryan Lindberg will face Famil Suleymanov of Azerbaijan and Denis Makarov of Germany tomorrow knowing that positive verdicts will guarantee podium finishes.

A further four Irish fighters will take to the ring in Wednesday's last eight schedule following a trio of fine wins tonight.

At light-welterweight, youngster John Joe Joyce proved too clever for Scotland's John Thain with a 20-3 win, while at middleweight Eamon O'Kane scored a superb 7-6 win over experienced Turk Adem Kiliggi.

Cornelius Sheehan recorded a 10-2 win over Belarussian Viktar Chvarkou and will be joined by the already-qualified David Oliver Joyce.
