Mr Jack Nash, SIPTU regional secretary, said a further meeting of his members would be held on Saturday, where it would be decided on how to progress with matters, including whether they would go back to work.

Referring to the meeting with the Minister of State for the Environment, Mr Robert Molloy, on Tuesday he said: "Everything was up for discussion. He said he would take on the full range of hardships that will affect people in so far as possible."

However, Mr Nash and Mr Tommy Gorman, of the National Taxi Drivers' Union, both confirmed that Mr Molloy had stressed at the meeting that reintroducing a limit on taxi numbers was non-negotiable, although there was room for discussion on developing "further quality requirements".
