SIPTU members elect new general secretary

Ireland's largest union, SIPTU, has elected a new general secretary.

Ireland's largest union, SIPTU, has elected a new general secretary.

Mr Joe O'Flynn from Cork was voted in last night. He will replace Mr John McDonnell, who retired from the post last weekend.

Mr O'Flynn won on the second count with 57,592 votes, compared to Mr Noel Dowling's 52,293. The third contestant, Mr Des Derwin, was eliminated on the forst count having won 7,512 votes.

"I am absolutely and wholeheartedly committed to SIPTU and to the trade union movement in general," Mr O'Flynn said after his victory.

The election results will be ratified by the National Executive Council later today.
