SIPTU announced today that it had agreed a "working alliance" with the TEEU, Ireland’s largest craft union, with 35,000 members.

Mr Des Geraghty

SITPU is the country’s largest trade union, with upwards of 250,000 members.

Representatives from the two unions met in Cork over the weekend to draft an agreement for engineering, electrical and manufacturing workers.

The President of SIPTU, Mr Des Geraghty, said the agreement would aid the unions in dealing with problems facing their members in Tara Mines and Aer Lingus, where over 2,000 jobs are at risk.

He said, however, that there were no immediate plans to amalgamate the two groups.
