The Cranberries' lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, has accepted a public apology over a newspaper's allegation that she went on stage with a skirt but no underwear. Her solicitor, Mr John Kelly, told Mr Justice French at the High Court in London yesterday that the item in the Daily Sport last July was "untrue, offensive and distressing", and could cause, the singer substantial financial loss.

Headed "Pop Stars Knix Blow", it falsely accused her of indecently exposing herself on stage during a concert in Hamburg. Sport Newspapers Ltd agreed to pay £5,000 to the charity, Warchild, on Ms O'Riordan's behalf and to pay her legal costs.
