A falling road sign forced gardaí to close a section of the M50 motorway last night.

A Garda spokesman said the road was closed in both directions at Junction 16 (Cherrywood).

He said a sign spanning the six lanes of the motorway had come loose and was in danger of falling on to the road.

He said a crane was enroute to address the problem but it could take some time to repair.

Gardaí attended the scene and put diversions in place.
