A dispute between the former general secretary of the Irish Dental Association (IDA) and his former employer has been settled amicably, an employment appeals tribunal heard yesterday.

At a meeting between both sides yesterday morning agreement was reached on a financial settlement and the withdrawal of an allegation of financial impropriety made against Donal Atkins.

In a statement to The Irish Times, Mr Atkins said the case had been settled after the IDA had "unreservedly withdrawn" any financial allegations against himself.

A spokesman for the association confirmed the settlement amounted to approximately 10 months' salary and a withdrawal of one of 11 allegations against Mr Atkins. The IDA looked forward to moving on from the episode.

Mr Atkins was sacked from his job last December after 26 years as general secretary of the association. The tribunal heard the IDA claimed Mr Atkins had given himself an "unsanctioned pay rise" of more than 16 per cent. The association also said Mr Atkin's dismissal was due to several instances of misconduct.
