YOUNG CANDIDATES:LABOUR MARKED the second anniversary of the last general election by displaying a large red card outside Government Buildings yesterday with the slogan, "Show Fianna Fáil the red card."

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said that two years ago, yesterday, the Irish people had voted in the general election, returning Fianna Fáil to office for a third successive term.

“I have been involved in many election campaigns over the past 20 years, but I have never before detected such a level of seething anger with a government,” he said.

“Despise is not too strong a term to sum up the current view of a great majority of our people to this Government.”

The emphasis at yesterday’s media event, held in brilliant sunshine, was on the party’s young local election candidates.

As for the Labour slogan, one veteran activist remarked: “There was a time when Fianna Fáil used the red scare against us. Now, we are showing them the red card. Times have moved on.”
