Shots were fired during a raid on the Bank of Ireland branch in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, yesterday. Gardai said three men wearing balaclavas got away with "a small amount of money". Nobody was injured. The getaway car was later found abandoned in Skerries.

The Fine Gael spokesman on justice, Mr Jim Higgins, said the raid and recent gangland murders meant the Dublin of the new millennium was fast becoming the "Chicago of the 1930s".
