Denmark's Steen Tinning took over the lead from Padraig Harrington in a curious mixture of brilliance and bogeys as the Telefonica Madrid Open went into its final nine holes today.
Harrington, one ahead overnight, birdied the first two holes, but so did Tinning and the Dubliner then had bogeys on the fourth and sixth.
Tinning had a bogey in between and after both birdied the long seventh there was a two-stroke swing on the 385-yard next.
Harrington was bunkered off the tee and three-putted for another bogey and Tinning went two clear when he hit his approach to two feet. But a bogey on the short ninth, where he missed the green and chipped 10 feet short, reduced the gap to one.
Welshman Bradley Dredge got into a share of the lead by going to the turn in a sparkling 30, but then drove into the trees on the 12th and bogeyed to fall alongside Londoner Brian Davis, Australian Adam Scott and South African Trevor Immelman in joint third place on 15 under, two behind.
Retief Goosen, Stg£34,000 ahead of Harrington on the Order of Merit with only two more events to come, turned in 33 and with eight to play was 14 under.
