Galaxy quest
The Hubble Space Telescope has detected what could be the oldest galaxy ever observed – one that dates back 13 billion years.
The image, which has been published in the journal Nature after being detected by Hubble’s recently installed wide-field camera, could help astronomers better understand the early universe.
“The most important aspect of this is it provides us with some sense of how fast galaxies are building up,” says Prof Richard Bouwens of the Netherlands’ Leiden Observatory.

Crash test dummies
Two British pensioners were hospitalised after their car’s satnav system instructed them to drive into a church in Germany.
While driving along a rural route near the Austrian border at night, the navigation system directed the couple to turn right where there was no road.
The 76-year-old driver crashed into the side of the village church, causing €25,000 worth of damage.
“They were confused and didn't notice that the navigation system was faulty,” a police spokeswoman said.
