Iarnród Éireann has said rail services on the Dublin-Sligo line will return to normal after overnight work to rectify a major signal failure that caused major disruption yesterday.

Hundreds of rail travellers were affected on the Dublin-Sligo line yesterday, forcing long delays and cancellations to a large number of commuter services, especially those going through Maynooth.

Iarnród Éireann said the problem first arose at Porterstown in west Dublin just before noon, when a computerised malfunction hit the signalling system and many trains had to halt in Clonsilla and Coolmine.

The company said work was completed overnight and no further disruption was expected today.
