A MAN who allowed an “emaciated” and “distressed” horse to lie dying in a field has been given a suspended jail sentence.

John Daly, Upper Tomard, Bilbao, Co Carlow, appeared before Carlow District Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty to two horses in his care on February 29th, 2008.

Imelda Leahy, solicitor for Mr Daly, told Judge William Harnett Mr Daly had bought the horses in poor condition for €200 each.

ISPCA inspector Brendan Hughes had told an earlier sitting of the court that when he called to the field at Bilbao he found an “extremely emaciated” and “frightened” horse lying on the ground.
