A security operation is underway in the village of Claudy in County Derry this afternoon.
The RUC said they had received a number of anonymous calls about a bomb being left near the police station since Wednesday. The surrounding area has been sealed off and a number of buildings have been evacuated.
A spokesman said due to the deliberately imprecise information received about the exact location of a possible device the police had a duty to protect the public and carry out a detailed examination of the area.
