Police and British army personnel investigating a suspect device in Derry's Bogside last night were attacked by gang of 50 to 60 youths, according to the PSNI.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the security forces were dealing with a package at Fahan Street when they came under "sustained attack" from the nationalist youths.

They fired petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and bottles from the Rossville Street direction.

There were no reports of serious injuries, but a number of police and army vehicles were damaged.

The device was later declared a hoax.
