Security forces have been attacked with petrol bombs after they intervened in clashes between Catholic and Protestant gangs in a flashpoint district of Belfast, police said.
A spokesman said a number of policemen and soldiers were hurt last night when they moved in to separate the rival factions during disturbances in the north Belfast.
A PSNI spokesman said about 100 people on each side were involved in the clashes, during which more than 40 petrol bombs were thrown and several police and military vehicles were damaged.
A number of vehicles were hijacked and one car was set alight and rolled at police lines, the spokesman said. One person was arrested.
