ALLIANCE FOR EUROPE:THE CHAIRMAN of the Irish Alliance for Europe said yesterday it would be an "insult to the citizens of this Republic" if the Lisbon Treaty were to be put to a second referendum unless there was an identifiable change that could be negotiated with our European partners.
Speaking at the group's final press conference, Ruairí Quinn TD said "we cannot identify anything in this treaty that Gerry Adams or anybody else wants us to change."
"He says go back and get a better deal, he hasn't pointed to a single component around which a better deal will be constructed.
"So there is nothing on the horizon coming from the No side that we could possibly go to our European partners and say we need a change in relation to this particular element."
"What would you have the second referendum on? I mean to put that same question to the people again without changing anything . . . we didn't do that in Nice Two . . ."
It would be an "insult to the citizens of this Republic to say you got the wrong result the first time. Vote again," he added.
Yesterday's press conference was attended by, among others, former taoiseach Garret Fitz-Gerald and environmentalist Duncan Stewart.
Dr FitzGerald said he would be voting Yes "with all the accumulated enthusiasm of my 82 years".
Mr Stewart emphasised that the treaty would enable the EU to combat climate change.
