Arsonists destroyed a Garda patrol car in the early hours of yesterday in a blaze which also damaged the adjacent Garda station. This is the second time in nine months that criminals have struck at Pettigo Garda station on the Donegal/Fermanagh border.

A patrol car outside the station was damaged last October. However, the damage was much more severe this time with the car being destroyed in the blaze and the building suffering scorch damage.

The station is not manned on a 24-hour basis and was unoccupied at the time of both incidents.

"We are anxious to speak to anyone who may have passed by the Garda station between 11.00 p.m. on Sunday night and just after midnight," said Supt John McFadden.

"This is a very serious act of arson," he said.
