A passenger alerted crew who launched a small rescue craft, but she could not be found.
Lifeboats from Rosslare, Fishguard and St David were then scrambled and two helicopters, from the Dublin and Welsh coastguards joined the search about 20 miles off Tuskar Rock, Co Wexford.
Poor visibility hampered the search and although the helicopters searched with infra-red scanners there was no sign of the missing woman.
The ferry eventually continued to its destination and the search was abandoned.
