Rescuers are continuing their search for a Swedish man who has been missing in the Kerry mountains since yesterday.

The 22-year-old left from Kilgarvan for a 17-mile hike along the McGillycuddy Reeks early on Tuesday morning.

When he failed to return as expected last night, local gardaí and the Kerry Mountain Rescue team were alerted.

Efforts to reach the man on his mobile phone failed and a search covering more than 60 miles of the Reeks began at 8.00 a.m. this morning.

A helicopter has been called in to assist the search.
