A search is continuing tonight off the Co Wexford coast for a fishing boat that failed to return to port.

The Rising Sun, which had a three-man crew, was last seen at around 3.30pm off the Great Saltee Island, 9km from the coast.

The search was being led by the Naval vessel, the LE Orla. Lifeboat crews from Rosslare, Fethard-on-Sea and Kilmore Quay also joined the operation.

A Kilmore Quay Lifeboat spokesperson said: "The vessel was collecting lobster pots off Kilmore and we haven't had any contact from the boat since then.

"Attempts to contact the Rising Sun have so far been unsuccessful and conditions are very misty in the search area."

At least six fishing boats from Duncannon and Kilmore Quay have also gone out to search for the missing boat.

The Coastguard Service did not receive any May Day or distress call but the alarm was raised after the boat failed to return to Kilmore Quay at around 4.30pm.
