A search for a crewman who fell from a boat in the Waterford estuary last night has been ended for the day and will resume early tomorrow.

The man was one of a three-man crew on the 10-metre Boyne Harvester, a shellfish dredger operating about 300 metres off the coast at Creadon Head.

Conditions for the search were "fine" today, according to a Department of Transport spokeswoman, and were calm last night  when the man fell overboard.

The man who is in his 50s is not believed to be from the Dunmore East area. The boat is from Drogheda, Co Louth, but has been working out of Dunmore since July, according to one report.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call at 11.45pm last night alerting them that a man had fallen overboard.

A rescue helicopter from Waterford, the Dunmore East lifeboat and the Feathard lifeboat as well as the Dunmore East Coastguard unit were immediately called into the search.

It was scaled down at 3am, but the Feathard lifeboat stayed out throughout the night.

The helicopter went out again at 7.30am this morning and the search of the coastline ended at six o'clock this evening.

Local boats are also taking part in the search.
