A search for a man who was seen falling off a passenger ferry in the Irish Sea was called off overnight after nothing was found.

The search began when the man was reported missing from the Stena Explorerat about 11.00 p.m. last night.

The ferry, en route from Dún Laoghaire to Holyhead, was 22 miles off the coast of Wales when the incident happened.

The search for the passenger covered a six-mile square area of the Irish Sea. Holyhead coastguard said it is unlikely the man has survived.

"The weather on the scene is choppy with force five winds," Holyhead Coastguard watch manager Mr Geoff Hunt said. "The sea temperature is seven degrees - which gives this man just a few hours of survival time".

The search would not be resumed, he added.
