Gardaí in Co Tipperary are investigating a raid in which a gang stole a substantial sum of money from a golf club on Friday.

The group of four masked men, who were armed with pickaxe handles and a screwdriver, confronted a member of staff and his family at Nenagh Golf Club at about 11.40pm.

They threatened the man, his partner and a 12-year-old child before forcing him to open a safe. Gardaí said one of the raiders spoke with a Dublin accent.

After emptying the safe, the gang fled in a large dark car towards Nenagh.

No one was injured during the raid.

Gardaí in Nenagh urged anyone who was in the area and who may have seen anything unusual to contact them.

Sources said the gang made off with some €10,000 during the raid.
