A search operation has commenced off the Co Cork coast after a man went missing while diving near a liner sunk during the First World War.

The man was one of three people diving 90 metres down on the wreck of the SS Minnehaha which was torpedoed off Cape Clear by a German U-boat in 1917.

The alarm was raised at around 5.50pm and the Irish Coastguard Marine Emergency Rescue Centre at Valentia launched a major search operation.

The Irish Coastguard Sikorski helicopter from Shannon, Rescue 115 was dispatched to the scene while RNLI Lifeboats from both Baltimore and Courtmacsherry also joined the search.

A third RNLI boat, the Baltimore Inshore Boat also joined in the search as did the Naval Service ship, the LE Ciara and a number of local fishing vessels.
