Marine: Government plans to double funding for seaports and to increase spending on aquaculture development and maritime safety have been welcomed by the Minister of State for the Marine, Mr Pat the Cope Gallagher. Lorna Siggins reports.
A 101 per cent increase in spending on seaports and shipping has been allocated in the Estimates. There is also a 21 per cent boost in funding for the Irish Coast Guard to 38 million.
Fishery harbour development was allocated just €19 million.
Mr Gallagher said that fishing communities would benefit from over €38 million invested in the seafood sector. A provision of almost 5.7 million next year for aquaculture represents a 15 per cent increase over 2004, and "affirms the commitment to the sustainable development of the sector," he said.
Board Iascaigh Mhara's allocation for seafood development is static, at 28 million.
Funding for marine research through the Marine Institute is up by 20 per cent, but the 17 per cent cut in funds for the National Seabed Survey reflects the fact that the project is coming to an end.
