The daughter of former Justice Minister Sean Doherty is to seek the backing of the Fianna Fáil party in her attempt to win her father's old Dáil seat.

Rachel Doherty announced she will put her name forward for nomination as a Fianna Fáil candidate for the new constituency of Roscommon/South Leitrim.

Fianna Fáil members will make a decision on who will run in the three-seat constituency following a party convention on September 8th.

Ms Doherty was elected to Roscommon County Council last year and lives in Cootehill, Boyle. Ms Doherty has previously worked with Bord Fáilte and is employed with the Cavan County Enterprise Board.
