The SDLP is to list up to 25 police stations and barracks across Northern Ireland that should be shut down in a policing document today.

Although many of these smaller buildings have been earmarked for closure, the party has also claimed others should go in areas well-equipped.

It has targeted four stations in Belfast, including one in the nationalist Andersonstown district, and Rosemount base in Derry.

"There is no significant policing or security contribution made by these stations," a party source said. "They are not cost effective; these areas are already adequately covered and the communities would be better served by getting police out on the ground".

The document also calls for surviving police bases to undergo a transformation to remove the militaristic appearance. Among the recommendations are removing or modifying all lookouts on perimeter walls and a routine open-gate policy at stations.

Heavy security gates should also be changed and surveillance monitoring scaled back.

The document will also recommend an unarmed police force in the North, given the right conditions.

Any move to disarm is likely to face resistance at rank-and-file level where officers fear they are being targeted by dissident republicans.
