SDLP claims SF website glorifies violence

The SDLP today accused Sinn Féin of glorifying paramilitary violence by selling pro-IRA merchandise on the Internet.

The SDLP today accused Sinn Féin of glorifying paramilitary violence by selling pro-IRA merchandise on the Internet.

The new official website being launched today by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams, calls on visitors to buy T-shirts with logos such as "IRA Undefeated Army" and "Sniper at Work".

Former Assembly member Eugene McMenamin accused republicans of living in the past.

"It is depressing to see Sinn F[AC[ein using their official party website to sell merchandise glorifying some of the worst atrocities over the past 30 years.

"In the online shop you are asked to buy an 'IRA Undefeated Army' T-shirt.

"The text on the website explains that the T-shirt is a 'tribute to the Irish freedom fighters who continue their struggle against British imperialism'," he added.

The former West Tyrone MLA said this contrasted sharply with the message on the first page of the site from Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams about building an Ireland of equals.

"People will undoubtedly ask what the real message is on the Sinn Féin website. Is it really about building an Ireland of equals or is it about ignoring the needs and disrespecting the views of a large section of the community?" he added.

Ulster unionist representative Mr David McNarry has made a formal complaint to the Chief Constable of the PSNI calling for an urgent investigation while the SDLP's Eugene McMenamin said the website was turning back the clock to the years of violence.

Mr Adams dismissed the complaints as "silly season nonsense". He said: "I want to thank both the SDLP and the unionists for publicising the website.

"I think what they are talking is complete nonsense. This is the silly season and this is just another example of the silliness."

He added: "The reality is that there is a link on the website. It is a link into a bookshop which sells t-shirts.

"If anyone is suggesting for one moment that Sinn Fein's role in the peace process, our commitment to the peace process, our involvement in the peace process and the future of the peace process is in question, because a shop sells t-shirts with the word IRA on it, then they just want to get real."
