SCHOOLCHILDREN IN Galway and Mayo are to be briefed in coming months about the deteriorating water quality in three western lakes, Carra, Mask and Corrib.

The aim of the initiative, which is being funded jointly by Mayo County Council, Galway County Council, Galway City Council and the Heritage Council, is to raise awareness of the next generation to water quality issues.

Carra, Mask and Corrib, as well as being premier brown trout lakes, are also the source of drinking water for the majority of houses and businesses in the west region.

The schools’ information project, which will cover 30 primary schools between now and June, was conceived by the Carra, Mask, Corrib Water Protection Group which was set up nine years ago.
