There are indications that Iarnrod Eireann is preparing plans for a "DART" system in Cork city. Company sources said while the matter was still at the preliminary planning stage, the possibility of opening up disused railway lines surrounding the city was being looked into.

It is understood Iarnrod Eireann is planning to investigate the possibility of bringing centres such as Blarney; Kilbarry, near Blackpool; Midleton; and Carrigtwohill into a new grid system which would allow thousands of commuters to leave their cars outside the city and use a fast transit service.

Although these plans are at an initial stage, it is believed the hope is to have most of the outer stations operating within five years.
