Pete Sampras was knocked out of the Australian Open today after being beaten by Russian ninth seed Marat Safin in four sets.

Safin won a bad-tempered match 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (10/8) in three hours, 33 minutes. He plays South African Wayne Ferreira in Wednesday's quarter-finals.
