SOUTH AFRICA: The driver in a minibus accident which killed eight British tourists and a South African man was not licensed to operate the vehicle, transport officials said last night.

Preliminary investigations indicated the driver was not authorised to operate a vehicle as heavy as the Mercedes Sprinter which overturned on New Year's Eve in the scenic Drakensberg region.

Speed may also have been a contributory factor, provincial transport spokesman Mr Logan Maistry said.

The results of the investigation will be sent to the British High Commissioner in South Africa and justice officials for possible prosecution.

Officials at Mask Expeditions, which owns the vehicle, were not immediately available to comment.   - (AP)
