Moscow - A Russian court yesterday rejected an appeal by the alleged US spy, Mr Edmond Pope, to be freed from jail for cancer treatment, in a case that has drawn in the US congress and President Clinton.

"Right now over the past few months in jail he has experienced a relapse of his illness, cancer," his lawyer, Mr Pavel Astakhov, said.
