The Beit art collection has been temporarily removed from Russborough, the stately home in Co Wicklow which was robbed in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
The robbery and subsequent Garda investigation have also led to the early closure of the house, which was scheduled to remain open until the end of October.
The decision to close the house was taken at a meeting of the Alfred Beit Foundation on Thursday.
Mr Raymond Keaveney, director of the National Gallery of Ireland, who is also a member of the Beit Foundation, said paintings belonging to the National Gallery which were occasionally sent to Russborough on loan, were now all back in the gallery.
But Mr Keaveney added that "it would be extremely silly" to reveal the location of the Russborough Beit paintings, which were now in storage.
Both sets of paintings were originally part of the one collection but the more commercially expensive of the Beit collection - about 18 paintings - were given to the National Gallery in 1986.
The foundation said it "was committed to maintaining Russborough and its collection for public enjoyment" and looked forward to the reopening of the house as usual next April.
