The RUC has appealed to community leaders to help ease tension in Portadown, Co Armagh, after a second night of rioting by loyalists.

Petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown at security forces in the Corcrain Road area of the town, but it was reported to be calm at 11 p.m. after the RUC intervened.

On Monday night an RUC officer suffered head injuries after police and loyalists clashed. The trouble flared after police tried to remove burning barriers put across the main Dungannon road near the Corcrain estate.

Supt Ian Chapman condemned the violence and appealed to community leaders in the area to help quell the violence. He thanked those who had already made such attempts.
