Romanian leftists said yesterday they were ready to form a minority government, after coming in ahead of all other parties in elections.

The Party of Social Democracy (PDSR), whose presidential candidate Mr Ion Iliescu faces a run-off with far-rightist Mr Corneliu Vadim Tudor on December 10th, said it would form the government with former foreign minister, Mr Adrian Nastase, as prime minister.

"The PSDR will assume responsibility for forming a PDSR-led government, with Mr Adrian Nastase as prime minister," Iliescu said.
