Bucharest - Romania's parliament yesterday approved the new left-wing minority government and its economic programme intended to relaunch the economy and move towards membership of the European Union and NATO.

At a joint session of parliament members voted 314 to 145 in a secret ballot to confirm Mr Adrian Nastase, executive leader of the Party of Social Democracy (PDSR), as Prime Minister.

The vote also approved his new minority cabinet and its programme.
