Tennis:  Andy Roddick's hopes of winning the French Open came to an unfortunate end today when he withdrew midway through his first round clash with Alberto Martin with an ankle injury.

Roddick, who came into the tournament hampered by neck and ankle trouble, was losing 6-4 7-5 1-0 to the Spaniard when he quit.

The American fifth seed, whose rough start to 2006 has seen him reach just one semi-final so far this year, looked in discomfort in the first set.

He battled on valiantly but was forced to throw in the towel at the start of the third set.
