The convoy of the UN Human Rights Commissioner, Mrs Mary Robinson, came under fire while she was touring the divided West Bank city of Hebron yesterday, officials with the international observer mission said.
Palestinian police and witnesses said the convoy was shot at by Israeli soldiers guarding a Jewish settlement but the army said the source of the fire was from Palestinian areas.
Mr Einar Henriksen, head of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron, said one bullet was fired and hit a TIPH patrol car. No one was injured, he said, adding that the TIPH would investigate the incident.
He said he "expresses his deep concern over this incident and calls for restraint from all parties."
Mrs Robinson arrived last week to investigate the human rights situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
