CASUAL roadside trading may be either on the way out, or about to come under tight restriction and regulation, as the various counties in the south-east region move towards implementing a licensing system under new by-laws.
Waterford Council heard that roadside trading is, in fact, illegal on all national routes. The councillors were warned by officials that, failing proper regulation of such trading, the council might be found legally liable if the location of a vendor was held to have contributed to or caused a road accident.
Draft by-laws are to be placed on public display, and submissions invited for consideration before adoption.
